January 2013

The methodology for calculating exchange rates for purposes of the PMPRB´s International Price Comparisons is described in Schedules 6 and 7 of the Compendium of Policies, Guidelines and Procedures, which came into effect on January 1, 2010 (previously under Schedule 3 of the Compendium of Guidelines, Policies and Procedures).

Existing Drug Products

The simple average of the monthly average noon spot exchange rates for each country for the 36-month period ending December 2012 will be used in the review of prices for existing medicines in the second half of 2012.

The international prices of an existing drug product for the period January to December 2012 can be converted to Canadian currency for comparison purposes by multiplying the local currency price in each country by the corresponding simple average exchange rate.

New Drug Products

The simple average of the monthly average noon spot exchange rates for each country for the 36-month period ending four months before the date of the first sale of the drug product. The average exchange rates in the following table reflect the PMPRB methodology.

e.g.: A new drug product first sold in May 2012, the exchange rates used are May 2012 since the following table includes four months before the date of the first sale of the drug product as per Guidelines.

The methodology for calculating exchange rates for purposes of the PMPRB´s International Price Comparisons is described in Schedules 6 and 7 of the Compendium of Policies, Guidelines and Procedures, which came into effect on January 1, 2010 (previously under Schedule 3 of the Compendium of Guidelines, Policies and Procedures).

Existing Drug Products

The simple average of the monthly average noon spot exchange rates for each country for the 36-month period ending June 2013 will be used in the review of prices for existing medicines in the first half of 2013.

The international prices of an existing drug product for the period January to June 2013 can be converted to Canadian currency for comparison purposes by multiplying the local currency price in each country by the corresponding simple average exchange rate.
