Au titre de son initiative de transparence, le CEPMB publie les résultats des examens des prix des nouveaux médicaments brevetés effectués par les membres de son personnel en application de ses Lignes directrices et ce, pour toutes les nouvelles substances actives lancées sur le marché canadien après le 1er janvier 2002.
Le prix de lancement du comprimé de 400 mg du médicament breveté Ketek a été jugé conforme aux Lignes directrices. En effet, le coût d'une thérapie au Ketek n'est pas supérieur au coût des thérapies utilisant les médicaments retenus pour la comparaison selon la catégorie thérapeutique. Le prix du médicament Ketek se situe également dans la fourchette des prix pratiqués dans les pays de comparaison où le médicament sous examen était déjà vendu au moment de son lancement sur le marché canadien.
Selon les Lignes directrices, les nouveaux DIN ayant plusieurs indications approuvées doivent être classés selon l'indication offrant les plus grands bienfaits thérapeutiques par rapport aux autres pharmacothérapies utilisées pour la même indication dans un segment de population relativement important. Lorsque aucune indication ne répond à ce critère, l'indication retenue pour le classement doit être celle qui présente le plus grand potentiel de ventes et un bon échantillonnage de médicaments de comparaison.
Le Groupe consultatif sur les médicaments pour usage humain (GCMUH) du CEPMB a recommandé de retenir comme indication principale du médicament le traitement d'exacerbations aiguës de bronchites chroniques ainsi que de classer le médicament dans la troisième catégorie des nouveaux médicaments (médicament apportant à tout le plus une amélioration modeste par rapport aux médicaments de comparaison).
Les Lignes directrices prévoient que le prix d'un médicament de la 3e catégorie ne peut être plus élevé que les prix des autres médicaments utilisés pour traiter la même maladie ou condition. Les médicaments de comparaison sont habituellement choisis parmi les médicaments existants appartenant au même niveau de la Classification Anatomique Thérapeutique Chimique que le médicament sous examen, soit dans le présent cas le 4e niveau, qui sont cliniquement équivalents pour traiter l'indication approuvée. Selon les Lignes directrices, la posologie recommandée pour la comparaison ne doit pas être supérieure à la posologie maximale habituellement recommandée. Les posologies recommandées pour le médicament Ketek et pour les médicaments de comparaison sont celles spécifiées dans les monographies, dans les rapports d'études cliniques, dans les directives sur les pratiques courantes et dans la pratique clinique.
Aux termes des Lignes directrices, le prix de lancement d'un nouveau médicament de la catégorie 3 est considéré excessif s'il est supérieur aux prix de tous les médicaments utilisés dans la Comparaison selon la catégorie thérapeutique ou, encore, s'il est supérieur aux prix pratiqués dans les pays de comparaison nommés dans le Règlement. Le prix du médicament Ketek a été jugé conforme aux Lignes directrices étant donné que le coût quotidien d'une thérapie à l'aide de ce médicament ne dépasse pas les coûts quotidiens des thérapies utilisant les médicaments utilisés pour la comparaison selon la catégorie thérapeutique.

Au moment de son lancement sur le marché canadien, le comprimé de 400 mg du médicament Ketek était vendu dans quatre des sept pays de comparaison nommés dans le Règlement, à savoir en France, en Allemagne, en Italie et en Suède. Conformément aux Lignes directrices, le prix du comprimé de 400 mg du médicament Ketek au Canada était inférieur aux prix pratiqués dans les quatre pays susmentionnés. Il était également inférieur au prix international médian.
